Turkish system continues its policy and in our days, but they are well protected by
western umbrella of media. In 1996 they
murdered 2 cypriot protesters who were just 100 meters away of their houses in occupied
area of Cyprus, and in a military
incident in Aegean Sea (Imia tiny isle) they shot down an elicopter (3 dead). They now
want also Aegean Sea.

Would you now want to discuss Israel's matters. Jews insist reminding to us all the time
the genocide commited by Nazis. I
have seen tens of movies with this subject. All the world know only one genocide this of Jewish people. This is right or wrong?

No one speaks about the genocide of Indians in south and north Amerika.

Why Israel insists with a war against Palestinians. Isn't time to give some lands
to them to have they also a state?

CONGRATULATIONS, you have presented an excellent website.
The tragedy of the whole situation is that for every one site we have which
accurately represents Hellenic history and the gross miscarriage of justice
perpetrated by the turks, the turks have a hundred of their own which
publish lies and deceptions. The turkish propoganda machine is a dangerous
weapon which has fooled thousands of people. Visitors to turkey are told
that the Ayia Sophia is turkish, the city of Ephesus is turkish. They
hijack our history accuse us of genocide, sometimes they even claim that

suggestions=Very interesting site. I went to Greece and Turkey last Summer and since
have become an avid reader of Byzantine history. I am fairly knowledgable in the study
of Western civilization and I have come to the conclusion that the Eastern Roman Empire
has been overlooked in its impotance to the developement of the modern world we know today.
I guess this is because most writers of Western history tend to come from Western Europe.
The importance of Constantinople as a buffer against a Islamic invasion of Europe cannot
be overstated. Thanks for keeping up this site.I am interested in finding a print of
Allan Sorrells painting of Constantinople during the 11th century. If anyone knows where i

At 2.10 a.m. on Saturday, December 21, 1963, two cars carrying ten Turkish
Cypriots, six men and four women, drove through the Greek quarter of
Nicosia, the Cyprus capital, heading for their homes in the Turkish quarter.
They were returning from dinner in Kyrenia, the resort on the northern
coast. They had eaten well, they were happy, and they were almost at their
destination.
They were actually inside the Turkish area when a group of armed Greek
Cypriot civilians suddenly appeared in the headlights of the leading car and
signaled it to stop. Both cars halted. The gunmen ordered everyone out of
the cars. The ten obeyed, puzzled. A crowd of Turks from the overlooking
houses appeared, awakened by the shouts.
As though on cue, a convoy of cars loaded with uniformed Greek Cypriot
policemen, brandishing Sterling machineguns outside the open car windows,
turned a corner ahead and roared up the street towards them. The civilian
gunmen quickly stepped aw from the cars.
The first burst of machinegun fire almost cut in two Zeki Halil Karabuluk,
25, married with three children, and Jemaliyeh Emir, 32, an attractive
divorcee with a 12 year-old daughter.
Three of the Turkish bystanders, caught in the savage fire, fell wounded to
the ground. The crowd fled, screaming. The civilian gunmen leapt into the
police cars. The cars drove off.
I was in a restaurant just a few hundred yards away when those first shots
echoed across the ancient walled city. I was not aware that they, and the
shots that were to follow, would be heard around the world.
Genocide -the extermination of the Turks of Cyprus -had begun.

Dear Sir,
I am from America (particularly the Southeastern United States). My goal
in life is to take Constantinople back for Greece. I am ready to fight for it,
and to die for it. After having studied Constantinople and the Byzantine
empire extensively, I am currently attending the University of Georgia with the
intention of working for the United States Department of State. It is my
undying wish that Constantinople be remanded to Greek hands, as it was for the
previous 22 centuries before the so called "conquest" by the Ottoman Turks on
29 May, 1453. I also support a Greek state that includes Thrace (with
Constantinople), and the better half of Eastern Europe (basically southern
Wallachia, Albania, Macedonia, Greece, and parts of Bulgaria). Seeing as how
Constantinople is no longer regarded by the Turkish state as the capital
(coupled with the weakening of the Turkish state, internationally), this is a
very realistic goal. I worship in the Byzantine Greek Orthodox Church, and I
abhore the atrocities committed by the so called "democratic" Turkish state
unto the Greeks of Asia Minor and Thrace, and as well, Turkey wide. All I know
to tell you beside this is that I am an avid collector of Byzantine relicsv (particularly coins, and crosses), as well as ancient maps of Illyria, Moesia,
Thrace, and especially Constantinople and Chrysopolis, that show the (real)
Greek names. If this description of myself does not suffice, please feel free
to write back, as I am always interested in input from people who share my
beliefs.

very true! one of these days (in the distant future,
actually,) I think that the greeks will retake the
city. However, I think that you Greeks should improve
your economy first, build up an efficient
power-projecting army and navy . . . and who knows? By
GOd's grace, you will reconquer the city that by right

suggestions=I read the comments of the Turk that now lives in the US. I believe that
there has to be a middle ground and that history dictates that this "harmony" of the Turk
people (and Islamic people) came at a price. The price was blood. Not only the blood of
the Greeks but the blood of many peoples. In history so often one sides heros are
another's villan. So, to say that history is wrong to portray the Turks this way would
be wrong. There's no need to shut down the site. It is historically accurate.
This person is the one that is passing out hate by comments such as "I close down the site".
I have many Turkish friends (and I am Greek) as well as many of my Greek friends and
family have many Turkish friends. Greece's greatest composer Mikis Theodorakis has been
lobbying for years for better relations between Greeks and Turks. There are web-sites
which promote friendship between our two countries. We should want peace. Greek schools
do promote understanding. Greece's literacy rate is much greater than Turkey's.
So please, do not spread the hate. There are better ways in trying to get your point across.
Perhaps state and cite historical accuracies from the Turk's perspective. Because
throughout the years, propaganda grows (on both sides) and the reality gets clouded.
Fanatisism in religion, distorted history, propaganda etc. lead to distrust and hatred.
We need to work together to promote harmony. Everyone has a story. The revolution of
1821 was great as people we finally FREE!!!!! People are burning themselves in Turkey's
prisons because of continued human rights abuses. What about the Kurds? They are still
waiting for their revolution. Freedom is everybodies right....

Calimera I am a university student in Japan, and studying about Byzantine Empire. On studying Byzantine,
I had a big question; "Why are Turks still ruling the capital of the Byzantine world?
Ottoman Empire have already vanished, and Turks have to disappear from Constantinople
and Anatolia where are the territory of Greeks, but why?" I began to think about the recovering of Constantinople.
A second question appeared. By whom Constantinople
will be recovered?
Russians call themselves the successors of Byzantine Empire, but Byzantine Empire was not a
Slav empire at all. At last, I concluded that nobody is a true successor of Byzantine who think
Constantinople must be released by Turks. After several months, I had an opportunity to study
about the history of modern Greece. I was shocked because I
found out that modern Greeks thought about the recovering of Constantinople(Megali Idea).
I was interested in Greeks and researched more about them. Finally, I reached your page
that make me be sure that present Greeks are the real rulers of Constantinople.

Recently, more and more Japanese are interested in the Middle East and Eastern Europe.
Many Japanese travel to Greece every year, but it is true that most of them don't
know about true Greece and Hellenism in the middle age.
To let more Japanese know about the true rulers of Constantinople and history of
glory Byzantine Empire, the Japanese version of your page are needed.

History is fascinating - that of the region from Greece and surrounding
areas I find particularly rich (I have always had an empathy with ancient
Greece). But isn't it frightenning how people (or I should say
civilisation in general) doesn't learn from it??
This site is great for it's historical content and the promotion of
regional history - but it does nothing to help people come to terms with
what may have happenned in the past or to understand each other better.
Obviously you and many other Greeks, and Kurds, are angry with what has
happenned in your history - I agree that the Mongol invasions and many
subsequent activities of the Turks were rather barbaric.
I have spent some time in Greece - I was in love with the place, and wept
at the foot of Mystras with the thought of the magnificent loss when
Byzantium fell - but I wish to go to Turkey next. I am sure they have
similar stories, and think of Alexander the Great for one, as a demonic
oppressor also. That's the trouble with history - it never gives answers.
There has always been too much history for revenge to make any sense. The
only way to make anything better for anybody is to move forward and think
of how to make things better - for yourself AND 'them'.
Be proud of your history and love the richness of the past - but acknowlege
the past of your neighbours as well, parakalo.

One day last month in New York at a used book sale, I found something by an
"Anna Comnenna" - the story of her father the Emperor Alexius. I bought it,

Je ne suis ni turque ni pro-turc, mais je pense qu'il est très dangereux de répandre
de tels propos concernant tel ou tel peuple. Les turcs ou plutôt les chefs d'état,
les rois, les empereurs qui se sont succédés en Turquie ont en effet commis des atrocités
mais on ne peut pas sous ce prétexte accabler toute une population
et dire que toute la population turque est comme ça.
D'autre part, les Turcs ne sont pas les seuls à avoir colonisé d'autres pays.
Que pensez-vous des 400 ans d'esclavage et de colonisation des grandes puissances telles que

This is a western lie, designed to diminish the rights of the Orthodox Church, by demoting

It was really so frustrating to read such a mail from an Internet
friend. I thought that Internet has broken the chains of people enslaved by
gender, religion and nationality discrimination. Your mail prompted me to
send you a brief, straightforward and correct info about Turkish people. I
hope I won’t be too harsh while doing it. But I would like to apologise in
advance.
First of all we are never indifferent about other people’s lives and
freedom, in other words we respect all the people and never threat them with
war or any other way. Why should we do that? We know how hard it is to gain
and preserve freedom. Freedom is precious and sacred for us ‘cos we lost
thousands of people in World War I. We don’t want war. Regarding your claim
on missiles crisis, Greek was the one to buy Russian missiles and endanger
the peace b/w two countries. Your country was the one warned by other
countries because of this incomprehensible attempt. I found your thoughts
completely provocative, misleading and misrepresenting.
Without prejudice, regardless of their religion and nationality we see
everyone as a human being and treat them the way they deserve. That’s why
Turkish people are known with their hospitality. Ask a foreigner’s idea
about Turks who has been in Turkiye before. The first word she/he will use
would be "friendly". How many Turkish people do you know? Don’t believe on
every word you hear.
You’ve always heard the bad sides of Turkiye and Turkish people. Don’t
you think this is unreasonable? As your country, our country is made up of
different types of people too; conservatives, democrats, leftists, educated,
uneducated...etc.

History is NEVER mere fact- it is the interpretation of the observer, historian, politician

and some of the "facts" presented in your history books. I am currently living in Turkey
and I am coming to understand and appreciate the problems this country faces every day.

to foster hatred and negative attitudes towards other human beings. Human nature is selfish,

Here is my view.
Byzantium was created by a roman emperor, in the middle of Hellenism. Pontos, Minor Asia, Bosporus were the heart of Hellenic trade, culture, also great philosophers were born in Ionia, Ephesos (Minor Asia) etc.
So, as Byzantinologists admit, the power came in hands of Hellenes in 6th century. The language was hellenic, the dominant race of the poliethnic empire was the Hellenes. Trade, industry, literature etc. were hellenic and the works of philosophers and ancient Hellenes were preserved in Byzantium, or else they wouldn 't be known today.
However due to religion fanatism there was a war for non christians, and the name Hellenes meant for them paganists. They called themselves romans but the people were descendants of ancient Hellenes as well as we Hellenes are descendants of Byzantines.
In fact nobody call us with our proper name. In ancient Hellas the word "Hellines" was not used as much as Athenians, Spartians, Korinthians, Macedonians, Iones, etc. Romans and later Europeans called us Greeks from the word "Grekoi", Turks call us Younan etc.
To whom you think belong the heritage of Byzantium? Please answer to me this question.
To catholic Italians or Francs who fought against us in13th,14th century? To slavs whom we made Orthodox, but used to fight also Byzantium for many centuries?
I think belongs to Hellenes, who still today follow the same exactly rituals and protocols in Orthodox church and honour the great times of Byzantium, for example we chant in our church "Akathistos Hymn" for celebration of a great victory against Avars in 626, and we mourn the fall of Constantinople in 29 May 1453, and death of our last emperor Constantine Palaeologus.

First, I would like to congratulate you on maintaining an excellent web
site. I am strongly pro Greek. I like to think of myself as a
Hellenized American, the Greek people have long held a place of honor in
my thoughts and feelings. Secondly, I would like to comment on the
American involvement in Kosovo. The problem is not the U.S. per se, it
is our disgraceful leader Bill Clinton. His reputation as a great
American President that he seeks is now destroyed by his own actions.
In light of the scandals, he is attempting to build his reputation on
the blood of innocent people. He dropped bombs on Iraq and Afaganistan
to get scandal off the headlines. To say that this president is
ambitious is a gross understatement, he is hell-bent on leaving a great
legacy, so that he will be praised eternally in America. It now appears
that he betrayal of secret American technology to the Chinese government
that has greatly expanded their capabilities to wage a nuclear holocaust
against the U.S. What did he get in return you ask? 10 million dollars
in campaign money. He sold the security of 275 million Americans, and
countless others for 10 million dollars. He has brokered a series of
short lived peace agreements. The Irish continue to kill each other
without hesitation, the Israelis and Palestinians keep on dying as
before. He views Kosovo has a final chance to redeem his "great legacy
to the world" (his words). I'm of the view that the America has no
right to violate Serbia's sovereignty. Kosovo is a matter Serbia her
and her people. As for the evil empire of Turkey, I do not like
them.They are little more than thugs. It angers me to no end that the
U.S. doesn't say anything, let alone do anything about them. Yet, I
remain hopeful that I will see the liberation of Constatinople during my
life time, for when the Turk have finished killing Kurds and Armenians,
there will be no one for the Turks to kill but themselves. Until that
day when the Cross triumphs over the Crescent, I bid you farewell and
Godspeed.

J'ai lu avec grande indignation, =E9coeurement, abjection,
horreur le site web que vous avez consacrer a la Turquie. Il m'est tres
difficile d'admettre l'existence de personnes telle que vous, capable de
tenir des propos aussi haineux a l'egard de la Turquie. Pour votre
information depuis 1453 il n'existe aucune ville en Turquie sous le nom
de Constantinople; ancienne capitale de l'Empire Byzantin.
Pourquoi tant de haine, j'ai vraiment du mal a le comprendre. En
plus d'une totale meconnaissance des veritables faits historiques, votre
page est composee d'une multitude de mensonges, de propagande et des
images de drapeau Turc duquel degouline des gouttes de sang ne font
